Farther to the southwest were the lands of the Erie or Cat people. They were called the 'Cat People' because they often wore the skins of bob cats which were plentiful in this territory. Erie were the only Iroquoians who were not organized into a league.

The
Iroquois that lived in the southeastern area of North America and
settled in the area that is now known at New York State. Still others
settled in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. At this time, neither
the USA or Canada did not exist. Iroquois is a French name that was
given to a league of five Iroquoism-speaking nations. They were first
known as people of the longhouse, but they were not the only people who
lived in longhouses. The five nations called themselves
Haudenousaunee and they consisted of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga,
Cayuaga and Seneca. Originally they settled along the southern shores
of Lake Ontario and in the Finger Lakes area of the state of New
York. The Huron (or Wendat settled along the Georgian Bay. Pentun or
tobacco lived southeast of Wendat and Erie, on the most southern shoes
of Lake Erie. The Neutral lived near Niagara Falls.
